New study says that teachers prepared in alternate pathways are no better or no worse than teachers prepared in traditional academic programs. According to the panel that prepared this report, the lack of solid evidence to answer the ongoing debate of whether alt cert is better reflects a generally thin research base about how best to prepare our teachers. The panel also calls on the federal government to take increasing responsibility for monitoring the effectiveness of different types of teacher preparation. Many states are starting to do this (Louisiana and Florida in particular), where they are tracking different types of teacher preparation to student achievement.
As we await the data on teacher residencies, it will be interesting to see how it compares. Bottom line is that we need more research on teacher preparation.
