Building a Better Teacher

Friday March 12, 2010

Out this week in the NYT Magazine…  “Building a Better Teacher” asks the question that we are constantly asking.  What makes a good teacher?  In trying to answer this question, Doug Lemov sought out the best teachers he could find and through these school visits, he has developed “Lemov’s Taxonomy.” A book version based on the taxonomy titled “Teach Like a Champion: The 49 Techniques that Put Students on the Path to College” is being released this April.  One technique is Positive Framing, where teachers correct misbehavior by offering a vision for a positive outcome rather that focusing on the misbehavior.  Another technique is Cold Call where teachers will pick students at random to answer questions (that was one of my favorites when I was teaching).  I’m hoping to get this book in April and seeing what other techniques are recommended.
