The $650 million Investing in Innovation (i3) funding grant application has just been released by the Department of Education. Teacher residency programs can potentially qualify in the area of supporting effective teachers. There is competitive preference if the project addresses one or more of the following priorities: improving outcomes for young children; expanding students’ access to college and preparing them for success in college; addressing the unique needs of students with disabilities and of limited English proficient students; and serving schools in rural areas.
Applicants will need to demonstrate sustainability outside of the federal grant commitment to the program and have a 20% in-kind match from the private sector. In order to assist programs with finding matching support, the Department of Education has launched an Open Innovation Portal, where entrepreneurs, education stakeholders and funders can partner to develop and support innovative ideas within the education sector. Interesting concept- will explore this further and see what I can find on this.
