Mathematica just announced that they received a $4 million grant from the Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences to study the new teacher residency programs that are forming now from the Teacher Quality Partnership grants. This study will compare the academic gains of residency-trained teachers and traditionally-trained teachers as well as the retention rates for both groups of teachers. Researchers will also examine how candidates for teacher residency programs may differ from other teachers.
Founding residency programs have had much success with retention data and early results that show academic achievement with residency-trained teachers. We look forward to seeing the results of the Mathematica study (first report from study will be completed by Fall 2013).
