Last Friday, Obama announced his plan for improving teacher education, titled “Our Future, Our Teachers.” The plan has three main components. First, the Department of Education proposes to reduce reporting burdens for schools of ed and states. States are to identify their top teacher preparation programs and encourage others to improve by linking student test scores back to teachers and schools of ed. Second, the Presidential Teaching Fellows program will support pre-service teachers attending the top programs in each state. Finally, the Department will provide extra support for programs training high-quality teachers from diverse backgrounds.
