This Nation article is adapted from Linda Darling-Hammond’s new book, “The Flat World and Education: How America’s Commitment to Equity Will Determine Our Future” (Teachers College Press).
Interesting insights on the effects of inequality within our nation’s schools as well as the lack of investment in our public education system (while investing heavily in our incarceration system…) High-achieving nations, on the other hand, have made quite the investment in teacher preparation as well as equalizing resources provided to schools. Darling-Hammond ends the article with being solution-oriented, and I hope we can “make good on the American promise to make education available to all on equal terms.”
