I agree with Jonathan Zimmerman’s perspective on schools of education creating the opportunity to help train our best brightest students with a full year of training. Over the past nine years, this has occurred within teacher residency programs throughout the country, where schools of education have been encouraged to reform and innovate their practices and play an integral role in shaping how emerging educators align academic theory with the practice that occurs in the classroom.
Any institution that is considering alternate paths for teachers should keep the end goal in mind- creating effective teachers for the profession. Urban teacher residency programs - that uniquely work in partnership with both schools of education and school districts are well positioned to better prepare teachers to provide a quality education for our nation’s youth.
