Supportive Leadership can Retain Teachers

Monday March 8, 2010

A recent survey of over 40,000 teachers sponsored by the Gates Foundation showed that 68% of teachers called supportive leadership “absolutely essential” to retaining good teachers.  45% said the same of higher salaries, while 8% listed performance pay as the essential factor.  Teachers have identified five ways to address challenges facing today’s schools.  Those findings include:  Establishing clearer, tougher, common academic standards for all students, using multiple measures for student performance, innovating to reach today’s students, providing supportive leadership for teachers, and bridging school and home to raise student achievement.  Check out the report and let me know your thoughts on the findings.
