Today, UTRU voted to add six new members to its Board of Directors, as well as transition the current, founding board, to an advisory capacity. The new Board, comprised of education, policy, and business leaders, becomes effective immediately. The UTRU board will lead the organization in developing new strategies to build and support Urban Teacher Residencies, as well as continue to fuel this important movement in teacher preparation through national, federal, and state policy initiatives.

Jim Rechtin, Partner, Bain & Company (Treasurer)

UTRU’s Founding Board was instrumental in launching and supporting UTRU over these last four years. We thank them for their service, and we look forward to continuing our work with them in the future. Kerri Briggs, Director for Education Reform at the George W. Bush Institute (Secretary)
Kerri directs and implements the Alliance to Reform Education Leadership, the largest initiative in history to enhance the achievement of America’s children by improving the performance of school principals. Before joining the Bush Institute, Kerri served as State Superintendent of Education for Washington, D.C., where she worked closely with Michelle Rhee. Kerri has also served as Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, a position she was nominated for by President George W. Bush in 2007.
Joanna Jacobson, Managing Partner, Strategic Grant Partners (Chair)
Joanna Jacobson is the founder and Managing Partner of Strategic Grant Partners. Previously, Joanna worked in private industry where she held senior management and marketing positions in turnaround businesses, including the President of the Keds Corporation and SVP Marketing and Product Development at Converse Corporation. Earlier in her career, she worked at Colgate-Palmolive as Product Manager of the US Toothpaste business and for Worldwide New Product Development.
Talia Milgrom-Elcott, Program Officer in Urban Education at Carnegie Corporation of New York
Talia is a Program Officer in Urban Education, focusing on how to get great teachers and principals into high-need schools and support them there to success. Prior to joining Carnegie Corporation, Talia was the Project Director of System Transformation at the New York City Department of Education, under Chancellor Joel Klein. A lawyer by training, Talia clerked for Judge Robert Sack of the Second Circuit Federal Court of Appeals. In law school, Talia worked with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society on questions of digital space and content and focused on education and the role of public/private spaces and institutions.
Lisa Morrison Butler, Chief Impact Officer and Executive Director, City Year Chicago
Lisa joined City Year in 2004, bringing with her 15 years of experience in marketing and corporate communications. Previously, Lisa was the founder and President of TRACE, Inc., a marketing communications firm based in Chicago. Before founding TRACE, Lisa held various executive positions at SBC Ameritech and CBS Radio Networks.
Scott R. Palmer, Managing Partner, EducationCounsel, LLC
Scott is partner and co-founder of EducationCounsel LLC, an affiliate of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough. He provides legal, policy, strategic planning, and advocacy services to education leaders across the country. Until 2001, Scott served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights in the Clinton Administration, where he was responsible for the development of civil rights legal policy in education.
Jim Rechtin, Partner, Bain & Company (Treasurer)
Jim joined Bain in 2000, and currently serves as a Partner in the Chicago office. He focuses primarily on health care and on merger integrations, oriented towards go-to-market plans and regional strategies. Jim’s most recent work includes developing a turnaround strategy for an academic medical center, as well as building strategic and financial alignment between two joint venture partners.
