Project Inspire Launches in Chattanooga

TEACH/Here’s 4-8 residency program will now be called Project Inspire. The name change was inspired by residents’ passion for serving underprivileged students. “This is about more than just academia. It’s about people’s commitment to a value system,” said Cheri Dedmon, the program’s director. Project Inspire is a partnership between Tennessee Tech, Hamilton County Schools, and PEF Chattanooga. This new launch also allows the program to be customized for Hamilton County. Both Project Inspire and TEACH/Here’s 7-12 STEM residency remain part of PEF Chattanooga’s overall residency initiative. Read more in this Times Free Press article.

Where should we train residents?

Finding mentor teachers who are effective teachers and coaches, and who teach in high-need classrooms, is a challenge many residency programs face. Recent research indicates that teacher preparation candidates who train in easier to staff schools are effective and stay when hired in hard to staff schools. In “Where Should Student Teachers Learn to Teach? Effects of Field Placement School Characteristics on Teacher Retention and Effectiveness,” the University of Michigan School of Education’s Matthew Ronfeldt examines the relationship between student-teacher placement and the retention and performance of 2,860 New York City teachers who had field placements during the 2003-04 school year. Education Week covers the story here.

UTRU would love to hear your thoughts. How could this research impact where or how you train your residents? How does it impact where graduates are placed? Does this change your beliefs about what residents need to be effective in high-need schools? Share your thoughts by adding a comment below!

Education Sector Reports on the Collapse of Pittsburgh’s Teacher Residency

Education Sector published an analysis this week of the collapse of Pittsburgh’s teacher residency program. Pittsburgh Public Schools was working with UTRU to build the program, but a myriad of factors, including budget cuts and the loss of union support, caused the program’s demise just three weeks before residents were due to start. Education Sector’s analysis provides some interesting insight to the political and economic environments in which many residencies live. UTRU’s Christine Brennan is quoted in the report.
