The Internationals School-based Teacher Apprenticeship, Recruitment and Training (I-START) Program, founded in 2008, is a two-year teacher preparation and certification program designed and directed by the Internationals Network for Public Schools, the New York City Teaching Fellows, the New York City Department of Education’s Empowerment Support Organization, and Long Island University. This program is designed to address the shortage of highly qualified and effective teachers of English Language Learners (ELLs) in New York City by providing yearlong apprenticeships for inductees in International High Schools, a network of schools serving recent immigrant ELLs that have consistently and significantly demonstrated high outcomes for this student population.
