The Los Angeles Math and Science Residency (LAMS) is an innovative and rigorous year-long teacher training partnership program that integrates practice, content, theory, and pedagogy through an in-field apprenticeship model within The College Ready Promise (TCRP) schools in the Los Angeles region. The LAMS Residency is a collaborative partnership between Loyola Marymount University’s Center for Math and Science Teaching (LMU/CMAST) and The College Ready Promise (TCRP), a coalition of California public charter management organizations serving low-income and minority students: Alliance for College Ready Public Schools, Green Dot Public Schools, and Partnerships to Uplift Communities. Empirically proven and evidence-based methodologies for math and science teaching developed and tested by the Center for Math and Science Teaching (CMAST), located within Loyola Marymount University’s School of Education, provide the foundation for the LAMS Residency program.
LAMS curriculum places students at the core, applies mathematical and scientific thinking to teaching and learning, and emphasizes mathematical and scientific problem solving and reasoning as a key student outcome. Residents are guided along a path to become highly effective math or science teachers in TCRP schools that serve low income and minority students. Residents are matched with innovative, trained, and successful math and science certified clinical practitioners, known as Mentors. Mentors are credentialed teachers in the field who have demonstrated measurable success in teaching their students’ mathematics or science and are identified as change agents within their organization by their demonstration of master practice, effective co-teaching/co-collaborating, and coaching of fellow adult colleagues. Prior to and during the first year of the residency, each Mentor participates in the rigorous Math or Science Transformational Teacher Leader (TL) Certificate program, which applies and models mathematical and scientific thinking in all aspects of teaching, learning, collaboration, co-teaching, coaching, and action research, therefore producing highly trained teacher leaders who are effective both in the classroom with their students and within their organization with adults.
