More about University of Chicago Urban Teacher Education Program

Chicago Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP) is a project of the University of Chicago. UTEP was created in 2003 to prepare its students to become successful teachers, and eventually successful teacher-leaders, in challenging urban schools. The program represents a vision of pre-service education that is situated both academically and experientially in the complexities of the Chicago Public Schools. The mission of Chicago UTEP is to prepare reflective, urban public school teachers who are equipped with the knowledge and skills to instruct and inspire all their students to reach their full academic and personal potential, always with appropriate regard for their students’ social, cultural and economic circumstances. UTEP expects graduates to grow into leaders who guide professional and social change in their schools. Chicago UTEP offers an elementary program as well as middle school endorsements in English and mathematics. In 2009 Chicago UTEP will expand to certify high school teachers in mathematics and biology.
